This 1909 Arts and Crafts home was designed to take full advantage of the prevailing breezes and views of its oceanfront location, originally nestled amongst the dunes of Westhampton Beach. As one of few residences to have survived the 1938 Hurricane, the original structure underwent then-state-of-the-art resiliency upgrades in the wake of the storm. As Austin Patterson Disston Architecture & Design took on the next generation of the home, nearly 80 years after the hurricane, the focus turned to relocation, renovation, restoration, and most importantly, resilience.
Preserving the original character of the home was paramount, while updating the infrastructure and systems to ensure the home would thrive for another 100 years. Building on the home’s legacy of strength and adaptation, the structure was lifted and moved landward from its previous location within the dune. This pivotal move ensured the home’s safety and endurance, while maintaining ocean views and creating additional space for indigenous flora and fauna. Original architectural features such as stone veneer foundation plinth, stone fireplaces, and Arts and Crafts woodworking (on both the interior and exterior) were restored, enhanced, or recreated where necessary. Exquisitely curated interiors bring the home to life in a unique way, honoring the past with meticulously sourced antiques, while welcoming modern comforts, functionality, and taste. Each of these tremendous efforts of land, house, and home, result in an outstanding space, with a unique story, and a bright future.
