Carriage House

In the 19th century New Yorkers flocked to Long Island’s North Shore, building grand estates with equally well designed, if less formal, carriage barns. Recalling that graceful era, this new carriage house is set high on a grassy knoll, affording expansive views of Long Island Sound. An H-shaped plan creates courtyards in the front and back; oversized custom French doors and vertical planked shutters evoke carriage entrances. A steep cedar-shingled roof and stucco façade add to the informal elegance of this 9,500 square-foot house.  High ceilings, varying from 10 to 22 feet, and large windows open the pristine interiors to water views of the Sound below.
