Artists’ Waterfront Retreat

This functional, eloquent Quogue home, situated in a meadow-like landscape, simultaneously evokes classic beach house and a more sophisticated, waterfront retreat.  A primary goal for this space was to provide separate, but still related spaces for the homeowners to pursue their passions, without sacrificing the size and function of the communal living areas. Thus, the owners, two doctors, one with a passion for music and one for painting, each have a small studio to pursue their creative passions, while still remaining accessible to the rest of the primary living space. The design of the house has four distinct volumes of simple gable forms, that provide for desired separation and adjacencies, allowing the family to both gather together, recharge individually, and create without boundaries. The physical and visual connections to the outdoor living areas, landscape and the bay, extend the experience of the house beyond the boundaries of its walls and create an immersive feel for the family and their guests. Intended to serve as a family home for generations to come, this house dynamically bridges past, present, and future, traditional and modern, creative and zen, and leaves room for growth of the family as a whole, and the unique individuals within.
